Prayer for Vocations to the Priesthood

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Eternal Father,
Son of the Virgin Mary, we thank you for offering
your life in sacrifice on the Cross, and for
renewing this sacrifice in every Mass celebrated
throughout the world.

In the Power of the Holy Spirit we adore you
and proclaim your living presence in the
Eucharist. We desire to imitate the love you
show us in your death and resurrection,
by loving and serving one another.

We ask you to provide the holy and generous
priests that are so needed in our Archdiocese today.
Lord Jesus, hear our prayer. Amen.

Permanent Diaconate
Pope Paul VI implemented the recommendations of the Council in the document, Sacrum Diaconatus Ordinem on 18th June 1967. Within a few years, in some countries, the first new permanent deacons were ordained.

The Bishops Conference of Scotland submitted a request for the approval of the Holy See for the restoration of the permanent diaconate over twenty years ago in September 1980.  The Holy See subsequently approved the petition in May 1983.

At the meeting with the clergy of the Archdiocese on 21st November 2002, Archbishop Conti indicated his intention to establish the Permanent Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Glasgow.  Since then a good number of men have expressed an interest in the Diaconate in the Archdiocese.

On Sunday 28 June 2009, the first 12 Permanent Deacons were ordained for service in Glasgow. There are now 16 Deacons engaged in pastoral and liturgical ministry within parishes and chaplaincy settings.

The Permanent Diaconate is open to single and married men. All inquiries relating to the Permanent Diaconate should be addressed to Father Paul Murray at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
